English helps create confident communicators,
imaginative thinkers and informed citizens

At Seaton Park Primary School we use the Australian Curriculum along with other high quality resources to deliver an explicit and meaningful English program that includes reading, writing, speaking and listening.

To be effective readers children need to be able to use six components in combination – oral language, phonological awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension. At Seaton Park, educators use the Letters and Sounds Program and use of decodable readers to teach phonological awareness and phonics skills. Vocabulary and comprehension strategies are explicitly taught during whole class shared reading.

In the early years, educators design play-based learning programs to develop children’s speaking and listening skills.

Each classroom uses a data informed spelling program, where children learn to spell words at their level and have multiple opportunities to practice and master the spelling of their words. Educators plan and teach the different writing genres including both creative and informative styles.

We monitor student progress regularly and are committed to seeing growth in English for every child.
